Drew was an outstanding athlete at Waterville High School who earned all-state B honors in both baseball and football. Heid completed a superb college baseball career for Gonzaga University by being named as the West Coast Conference's Most Valuable Player as well as a unanimous all-league centerfielder after setting the school record for most hits in a season.

Drafted in the 9th round by the Angels, he was assigned to the Orem Owlz in the Pioneer League. Drew was outstanding as a first year professional and led the Pioneer League with 102 hits while batting .362 in 68 games. He spent most of his minor league baseball career playing for AAA and AA classification teams.
