Hillary Merkley "walked-on" at ISU as an outstanding multi-sport athlete from Okanogan High School. She initially intended to play basketball as well as compete in track and quickly earned a scholarship in the latter. Her finest performance came in the 2001 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track Championships when she won the heptathlon while setting a school record and recording a NCAA qualifying total of 5,320 points. She was voted the meet's Outstanding Field Event Athlete. Hillary won the conference indoor shot put title as a freshman with a mark of 48-0.25 feet to set an ISU record. She also had the conference's highest pentathlon mark indoors. Hillary recorded top-10 Bengals' marks in other events including the indoor shot, intermediate hurdles, outdoor 800 meters, indoor and outdoor 4x400 meter relay, and the 55 meter hurdles. She received the school's Outstanding Track and Field Athlete Award three times.
