Michael dominated in basketball and as a baseball pitcher for Brewster High School. He played important roles on outstanding hoops teams that registered an incredible 79-3 record during three years. Brewster won two state 1A titles and finished second in 2A during that span. Michael earned all-Caribou Trail League basketball berths all three seasons. He was named state of Washington 2A Player of the Year and Caribou Trail League Player of the Year after averaging 25.9 points per game as a senior.

Brewster baseball teams dominated while he played on squads finishing third twice before winning the state 1A title in 2006. Michael was the team's ace hurler while going 26-0 on the mound. As a senior he was named the CTL's Most Valuable Player and received the NCW High School Male Athlete-of-the-Year award following his senior year.

As a freshman at Eastern Washington University, Michael made an immediate impact as sixth man for the Eagles while averaging 5.7 points per game. He transferred to the University of Montana where he also contributed as sixth man until moving to Whitworth University to participate in both basketball and baseball as a senior. Michael wasn't only an NCAA-III All-American for the Pirates, he was named NCAA-III National Player-of-the-Year and Northwest Conference Player-of-the-Year for 2010-11 after averaging 19.8 points per game and leading Whitworth to the 'Elite Eight' in the national tournament. His abbreviated season on the mound due to basketball playoffs still earned an honorable mention All-Northwest Conference berth. Michael was named NCW College Male Athlete-of-the-Year in 2011. In all, he was a finalist for NCW Sports Awards four times (twice both as a prep athlete and as a college athlete).
