With fluidity and speed, Vern glided to statewide prominence in track. In his first year of competition eligibility as a sophomore, it was evident that Vern had the physical abilities necessary to succeed as a high hurdler. Sweeping meets as a senior, the lanky athlete became Wenatchee High's first "State of Washington Hurdles Champion" by winning the 120-yard high hurdles title in :14.6 seconds. Vern was also a "district champion" in the "broad jump" as well.
On the basketball court, he was an accomplished 6'3" frontcourt player for two seasons and received "All-Western Conference" honors while leading the Panthers in scoring as a senior. In all, Vern earned 5 varsity letters.
Recruited as a duo-sport athlete to the University of Oregon, he played two seasons on Ducks' basketball teams before focusing entirely on track. Vern contributed to a pair of national championship track squads as a high hurdler, long jumper, and triple jumper that were inducted into the University of Oregon Athletic Hall of Fame.
