Nathan, from Chelan, combined tremendous speed with athleticism to become a highly regarded prep athlete throughout the state of Washington as well as nationally. A top performer in track & field, he ranked second all-time for most points earned in state track meets. Nathan was nationally ranked as a prep decathlete, won the state high school decathlon title twice, and was a pole vault, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles multi-year state 'A' champion as well as a runnerup in the long jump. He earned all-league first team honors as a basketball player while averaging 17.0 points per game, and started for the football team at quarterback as a sophomore before concentrating on just two sports. Nathan was the first four time finalist for Prep Male Athlete Sports Awards and was selected as North Central Washington High School Male Athlete-of-the-Year in 1994.

He was recruited on a national basis as a track athlete and accepted a scholarship to compete for Auburn University in Alabama where he primarily specialized in the decathlon and placed in the Southeastern Conference championships. Nathan was a College Male Athlete Sports Awards finalist in 1995 and 1996. He was honored as NCW Sports Awards Male Athlete-of-the-Decade for the 1990s.
