Kristen (Shields) Hinton, a product of Lake Roosevelt High School, exemplified Whitworth University's highest standards, both in pursuit of athletics and academics. She graduated in 2004 as an NCAA-III champion in the 100-meter dash and with the President's Cup after achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Over the course of her track career for the Pirates, Shields won the Northwest Conference 100-meters title three times and achored the 400 relay in four consecutive conference championships. As a senior, she was the Northwest Conference Championships 'Women's Athlete of the Meet' after winning the 100 and 200 meters and leading the 400 relay. Kristen earned her first NCAA Division III All-American honors as a junior in 2003 by finishing fourth in the 100-meter national championships. The next year as a senior, she won the 100, and added a 6th place finish in the 200-meter dash to earn All-American status in that event as well. Her time of 11.81 seconds led NCAA-III 100-meter sprinters in 2004 and set a school record (she also recorded a wind-aided 11.70). Kristen set a Whitworth record of 25.06 seconds in the 200 as well. Following her senior season, Shields was named the 'College Division Track & Field/Cross-country Academic All-American of the Year' by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Later, she was selected as 'College Division Academic All-American of the Year' for all sports.
